Eight people is one deck boat or one pontoon. Twelve is one 12-passenger pontoon, full, or one tritoon with room. Twenty is two boats, and the pairing matters, which is the next section. Ask the counter for the plate number, not the marketing number; "seats 12" and "rated 12" are not always the same boat.
When one boat becomes two: the 14-to-20 plan
The pairing that works for a group of 14 to 20 is one 12-passenger pontoon or tritoon plus one center console. The pontoon is the anchor boat and the platform: it carries the coolers, the kids, the grandparents and the shade, and it stays on the sandbar or in the harbor. The center console carries the six to eight people who want to run the pass, troll the beach or fish the jetties, and it comes back to raft alongside the pontoon at lunch. That is $700 to $925 for a half day before holds, waivers and fuel, or roughly $45 to $65 a head for twenty people.
Two pontoons is the cheaper answer for twenty, $600 to $800 for two half days, and the right one if nobody wants the Gulf. Raft them at the sandbar: the first anchors bow into the wind with a stern anchor set, the second comes alongside at idle from downwind with fenders out and ties off bow, stern and spring, and its anchors stay stowed. Engines off once tied, one swim ladder in use, one adult counting heads. Sunday through Wednesday the wind is 5 miles an hour and the bay is glass. The afternoon storm chance is 40, 30, 20 and 20 percent, so a group of twenty on two boats agrees before leaving the dock that everyone is inside the harbor by 1pm if the radar shows anything to the west. The pontoon is the slowest boat on the bay; it leaves first.
Thursday and Friday the rain goes away, 10 and 4 percent, and the wind comes up to 10 to 15 from the east with the whole length of Choctawhatchee Bay to build on. By late morning the open water north of the bridge carries a foot of short chop. This is where hull choice earns its money.
